2013 Blacks Run Clean-up Day, Saturday April 14
On Saturday, April 14th 22 Rotarians, family members and Rotaractors participated in the 16th annual Blacks Run Clean-up, working with 450 other volunteers to remove 2 ½ tons of trash from the stream. It was a multi-generational crew that once again anchored the most upstream portion of the clean-up. For the half-dozen youngest members the clean-up quickly became a treasure hunt, but for the rest of the Rotary team it was a chance to free the stream of everything from air mattresses to tarps to wooden pallets to the usual assortment of old tires. Special thanks to the JMU Rotaractors (pictured at left) for mobilizing for the cause, to the Rotarians and family members who came out, and to those who couldn’t be there in person but gave us the wherewithal to get the job done by loaning us their pick-up trucks for the day.
2013 District 7570 Conference Awards and Attendance
The Rotary Club of Harrisonburg won a Gold Club Award and the Best (Web Site)Dashboard Award at the District 7570 Conference at the Homestead March 15-17. Both Clubs are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg.
2013 International Students' Dinner
Approximately twenty-five members of Rotary Club of Harrisonburg, their spouses and fifty international students braved the ice and cold to attend the annual International Students Banquet hosted by the club, Friday, January 25, 2012. The event was held in the Highlands Room of the James Madison University Festival Center and provided the students with an opportunity to interact with Rotarians. Sometimes these encounters lead to ongoing connections. The Kenya Shoe Project which supports Well of Hope was begun as a result of Lynn Dively meeting a student from Kenya who shared about the difficulties back home.
Students attended from countries in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe and are enrolled in local colleges and universities. John Downey of the Harrisonburg club usually brings a significant number of students from Blue Ridge Community College to the event. The timing of the banquet coincides with the annual conference conducted by the Office of International Programs at JMU. The program began with a Mediterrean cuisine inspired meal followed by a brief program where several students were recognized for submitting exemplary resumes. Assistant District Governor, Chns Runion shared about how Rotary can impact a community and encouraged students to become involved in service as part of their personal and professional development. One of the highlights of the evening was "human bingo" where all participants spent time meeting one another and sought to fill in the blocks on their "bingo" card. Each year, theRotarians who attend remark about how much they enjoy the evening and are enriched by spending time with students from around the world.
